Happy #Reformation500

Luther theses

By Pastor Glem Melo

Today, we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, at the heart of which is the recovery of the good news of salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, because of Jesus Christ alone. God’s word tells us so:

“We… know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.” – Galatians 2 15-16

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” – Ephesians 2:8-9

The statue of Martin Luther located on the campus of Concordia Seminary in Clayton, Missouri is an exact replica of the Luther statue in the Luther Monument in Worms, Germany.

This is the life-giving and life-transforming message that Martin Luther stood for and risked his life to proclaim.

“Sin is not canceled by lawful living, for no person is able to live up to the Law. The Law reveals guilt, fills the conscience with terror, and drives men to despair. Much less is sin taken away by man-invented endeavors. The fact is, the more a person seeks credit for himself by his own efforts, the deeper he goes into debt. Nothing can take away sin except the grace of God… [B]y grace alone, in opposition to every other means, we obtain the forgiveness of our sins and peace with God.” – Commentary on Galatians 1:3

“Sin lingers in us, and God hates sin. A transfusion of righteousness therefore becomes vitally necessary. This transfusion of righteousness we obtain from Christ because we believe in Him.” – Commentary on Galatians 3:6

Luther at the Diet of Worms, by Anton von Werner, 1877

As we celebrate #Reformation500, let us sing with all who put their trust in Christ alone for salvation and eternal life,

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.

Love Lansing

By Pastor Glem Melo

21765776_1861999230491882_532360530331394823_oLast Saturday, Aymi and I were blessed and privileged to serve and help paint a house with Love for Lansing volunteers. The homeowner was blessed and encouraged and so were we and all who served in the outreach.

Love for Lansing is the effort of First Church (PCA) to serve some of the needs of our community.  We assist people in very basic ways such as yard clean up, housing projects, etc., as a way of showing the love of Jesus to the people of Lansing. –

Please pray that the Lord will use this great church and ministry to bless and encourage many who are needy and destitute in the community.

Chicago Incubator

Incubator 2017-09 a

By Pastor Glem Melo

Incubator 2017-09 bI was tremendously blessed, encouraged and edified to attend our very first Chicago Incubator session held at the downtown facility of Holy Trinity Church last September 9.

Chicago Incubator Urban Planter training is based on time-tested, gospel-centered curriculum developed over the last 15 years by leaders at Redeemer City to City in New York and adapted for Chicago’s specific context.

[It is] a 2-year… program that focuses on process, relationship and reflective practice instead of merely understanding new content. Each of the 16 Incubator learning module includes time for sharing issues, personal spiritual formation, and hands-on training that combines both theology, church planting theory and insights from adult learning theory.

Incubator 2017-09 cEach learning module addresses the specific needs of urban planters, including skills in thinking theologically about ministry and growth in the various areas of urban ministry. Church planters go through the program during the critical phase of launching their congregations. They get practical help on writing their action plan, the philosophy of ministry, crucial ministry development and preaching, among other topics. Ideally, this training is accompanied by coaching to encourage the planters to reach the maximum extent of their giftedness.

Our model is to train ‘IN’ ministry, not ‘FOR’ ministry. To be invited into the Incubator program, each Chicago participant is involved in actual urban church planting ministry so that the learning can be applied immediately and be ‘proven’ in real situations. Instead of saying, “This material will be on your next exam,” we say, “You will find out how you are doing next week when you lead or face this issue.”

Looking forward to our next training session with great excitement and eagerness.

Praise the Lord!

Power to Witness

2017-07-23 10.01.22

By Pastor Glem Melo

We need the Holy Spirit.  Christ died on the cross to pay for our sins, and to baptize and fill us with the Holy Spirit.  Indeed, He wants us to be baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit over and over again.  And everyday, we must ask Jesus to baptize and fill us with the Holy Spirit.

Listen to my whole sermon:

2017-07-23 10.03.18

Acts 1:8

1. We need the Holy Spirit.

2. Jesus empowers us through the Holy Spirit.

3. The Holy Spirit empowers us to witness for Christ.

Preached at Peace Community Church (PCA) in Frankfort, Illinois, U.S.A. on July 23, 2017.
