Tomorrow, June 18, I will begin teaching Systematic Theology to our Bible Training students in Cagayan de Oro City. It is our hope and prayer that this class will help pastors and workers be rooted, grounded, nourished and strengthened in God’s word.

“…until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.” (Ephesians 4:13-14)

Reading and a written summary of “Concise Reformed Dogmatics” by J. Van Genderen and W.H. Velema is required. For the bi-weekly lectures, I will follow the outline of “Systematic Theology” (New Combined Edition) by Louis Berkhof. I will also refer to the four-volume “Reformed Dogmatics” by Herman Bavinck from time to time as deemed necessary.

For our first session, we will study the “Names Applied to the Systematic Presentation of Theology” and “The Nature of Dogmas.”

“The assertion often heard in our day, that Christianity is not a doctrine but a life, may have a rather pious sound, and for that very reason seems to appeal to some, but is after all a dangerous falsehood… Christianity is a way of life  founded on a message. The gospel is the self-revelation of God in Christ, which comes to us in the form of truth. That truth is revealed not only in the Person and work of Christ, but also in the interpretation of these found in the Bible. And it is only by a proper understanding and a believing acceptance of the message of the gospel, that men are brought to the necessary self-surrender to Christ in faith, and are made partakers of the new life in the Spirit. The reception of that life is not dependent on some purely mystical infusion of grace, nor on the proper ethical conduct of man, but is conditioned by knowledge… They who minimize the significance of the truth, and therefore ignore and neglect it, will finally come to the discovery that they have very little Christianity left.” – Louis Berkhof

An outline of Prof. Berkhof’s book can be viewed at the website of Westminster Seminary California:

Please remember to pray for this most important new class.

About Glem Melo

I am a believer and follower of Christ, married, and have 3 wonderful kids. I am the founder and President of Open Eyes Mission (ministering as New Hope Global in the U.S.); a church planter among Muslims, Hindus, and other unreached people groups in the U.S.; and studying Doctor of Ministry at Trinity International University / Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. The Bible teaches that God is real, man is sinful, hell is real, and Jesus is our only hope of salvation. I believe these truths with all of my heart, and I hope to help others learn of them as well. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16) May God give you grace and peace. Glem Melo
